Most of the smaller businesses lack resources and capital to enable them to have a more rigorous business continuity whenever they are affected by emergency incidences, unlike the bigger businesses that always rise again even after being affected (Edwards, 2015). The other problem with the smaller businesses unlike, the bigger ones they lack formal processes. To prepare stronger and effective emergency response plan, then we have to follow some guidelines to achieve this. These guidelines include; determining the necessary conditions for evacuation of victims; designating secondary and primary emergency and route exits. All organizations must make sure that all these particular points are well marked or labeled for everyone to see. Organizations must make sure that they post these signs and also put in place the emergency lighting to act in place of the absence of power in the course of evacuating the affected victims (Howitt Leonard, 2009). These emergency exit routes must fulfill these conditions; they must be unobstructed and clear at all times; they should not expose people to additional dangers in the course of evacuation; the exit points must be wide enough to hold the number of the evacuating victims. Over the past 60 years the establishment of treaties have enabled Europe to be a more integrated market (McCormick, J. 2011). Following the treaty of Paris the Treaty of Rome was establi shed which created a free market with the removal of internal barriers and the agreed external tariff rate. Monopoly power decreased leaving businesses to be more competitive, a common agriculture policy was agreed upon to ensure stable prices and a competitive market. Maastricht Treaty The Maastricht treaty was signed in 1992 having significant impacts on the contracts of the member states of the EU as it was designed ââ¬Å" to achieve ââ¬Ëan even closer union among the peoples of Europe where decisions are taken as closely as possible to citizens. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ Three pillars were created to be able to achieve these objectives. The first pillar formalized the communityââ¬â¢s commitment to what already happened in practice in the European community as well as covering the economic and monetary union (McCormick, J. 2011). The second established common foreign and security policy and the third pillar concerns police and criminal law matters. The European Integration through a Single Currency TRANSITIONAL STAGE 1999-2001 : Official launch of the EURO In 1999 the single currency the ââ¬Ëeuroââ¬â¢ was introduced and some countries abolished their separate currencies, these included Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. Since then another five EU countries have adopted the currency, these being: Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta, Slovakia and Estonia. Fewer barriers within the market was a fundamental part of a more integrated Europe. Member countries were struggling to keep their currencies stable relative to the European currency unit and trading costs were high due to the expense of exchange rates which was causing the single market to not function properly. The integration could not happen for the member states without some sacrifice, namely resulted in some loss of autonomy. This issue with adopting a single currency carries financial instability, by which member countries no longer would have control over their domestic economic polices, including the control over interest rates, loss of sovereignty, and an absence of strong an institutional framework (ECB, 2012). The final stage in 2002 saw the introduction of coins and bills for circulation, and participating Eurozone countries original currencies disappeared. These countries included Estonia, Denmark, Latvia and Lithuania (BBC news, 2012). Later on France, Spain, Ireland and Greece were pressured to cut their budget deficits as debts start to grow. As the global economies slowed Greeceââ¬â¢s deficit became higher than previously thought and the countries finances weakened which caused Greeceââ¬â¢s debt rating to be cut from A to A-. Greece forecasted an increase in budget deficit to 12. 5 percent of GDP by 2009 (Bloomberg, 2012) way above Eurozone membership requirement of 3 per cent of GDP and national debt was 113% of GDP, nearly double Eurozone limit of 60% (BBC news, 2012). Following this Greeceââ¬â¢s debt was further down graded to BBB+ from A1 (Bloomberg, 2012). 2010 With concerns over other heavily indebted European countries arise including; Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain. Spain and Portugal launch austerity measure, with Spainââ¬â¢s budget deficit at 11. 2 percent of GDP. Both countries governments cut public spending and raised taxes (Steiner, S. 012). The EU leaders held a summit on Greece, on the 2 May the ââ¬Å"Euro-region (and IMF) agree on a 110 billion-euro rescue package for Greeceâ⬠and Greece agrees to austerity cuts of 30 billion-euros over the next three years in exchange for aid (Bloomberg, 2012). In 2010 Greeceââ¬â¢s budget deficit increased with a deficit more than fou r times the requirement of EU rules (BBC News, 2012). Greece adopted a plan to bring the European unionââ¬â¢s largest budget deficit within the EU limit by 2012 (Bloomberg, 2012), and the ECB announce that Greece ââ¬Å"wonââ¬â¢t win any special treatment from the central bank. (Jean-Claude, T, 2010). The European central bank omitted Greece having to leave the EU, with the EU commissioner Joaquin Almunia saying, ââ¬Å" Greece will not default. In the euro area, default does not exist. â⬠(Bloomberg, 2012). The European financial stability facility (EFSF), was set up as a provider of loans, leading money to countries that were struggling. They issued bonds guaranteed by the euro-area countries and helped failing banks and financial institutions through loans to governments (Steiner, S. 2012). Ireland was the next country to request a bailout package from the EU and IMF of a total of 85 billion-euro which enables it to handle its worst budget in the countryââ¬â¢s history (BBC News, 2012). The value of the Euro continues to fall as other countries debt increased and brings about further worries to the EU. 2011 The year 2011 begins with Eastona joining the Euro, increasing the number of countries with the single currency to 17 (BBC News, 2012), Portugal requested EU bailout funds and received 78 billion-euros from Eurozone and IMF (BBC News, 2012). In order to fight inflation the European central bank raised interest rates from 1% to 1. percent as inflation was 2. 6 per cent, which was above the ECB target inflation rate of below 2 per cent. EU publishes new debt deficit forecasts predicting Ireland, Portugal and Greece will all have debts more than their GDP (Bloomberg, 2012). The Eurozone is forced to continue expanding Greeceââ¬â¢s bailout package in order to ââ¬Å"prevent contagion among other European economies. â⬠As worries of t he crisis spreading around Europe increased, EU members made plans to set up a permanent rescue fund, funded by the Euro-area countries to establish a secure European stability mechanism. 2012 European central bank was forced to buy Spanish and Italian bonds in order to bring down their borrowing costs amid concerns that the debt crisis will spread to the larger economies of Italy and Spain (BBC News, 2012). Hungary failed to meet budgetary targets and EU finance payments were suspended, however they were reinstated as the governments made plans to push their budget deficit down to EU target. Spain requested 100 billion-euros (Bloomberg, 2012) to bail out banks in order to help the financial sector and avoid austerity measures that other countries that were bailed out were forced to implicate. Following Spain, Cyprus was the fifth Eurozone country to ask for bail out, it was predicted that 10 billion-euros was needed to bail Cyprus out (Yahoo Finance, 2012). Having gone through the timeline of events that marked the eurozone crisis, we can clearly see that the European integration is in fact at the origin of what has lead us to the Euro Crisis. It is Indeed those very measures of the integration that have led to the crisis (the will to include an increasing number of member states, the integration of these member states in haste, with sometimes being somewhat complacent budgetary situation of these countries). The EURO Crisis: The result of a failed European Integration. An interview in Bloomberg (2011) with the former ECB chief states that, ââ¬Å"there should have been better monitoring, better scrutiny and more sanctioning,â⬠then the crisis could have been avoided. An integration done in haste, there was a rush to encourage many countries to join the Eurozone and too early. The single currency was seen as the key to increased European integration. However we can now see that countries should have held back and waited until Europe was more integrated before joining the eurozone. There was a failure to impose budgetary discipline to member states. Greece has been in budget deficit for several decades (Fair observer, 2011) Greeceââ¬â¢s economy was never fit enough to join the Euro in the first place and the idea was only presented to them at the time of economic boom in capital markets, where there was a rush for a more integrated market. The European commission says that Greeceââ¬â¢s budget has not been within the 3 percent limit since the year of its accession (Bloomberg, 2011). Although these limits were set member countries failed to meet their own budget targets. There was a lack of sanction in the EU, Greece did not receive any penalties except for being told to tighten up their bookkeeping (Bloomberg, 2011). The EU did not issue penalties to countries that did not meet the debt to GDP set out in Maastricht criteria, as a result of these issues not being faced initially, the ratio continued to increase and no improvements were made. It did not help when Germany and France helped to relax the criteria when they failed to meet the deficit targets for three years before 2005 (Bloomberg, 2012). There were flaws in the treaty that actually made up the integration of Europe. For example, it is interesting to see that the Maastricht treaty assumed that only the public sector could cause such enormous debts assuming financial markets could always be corrected. We can obviously observe that this may have been the most instrumental mistake as the treaty missed out the possibility that an event of a public debt of a eurozone country where the ââ¬Å"currency union would have no bail out, no exit and no default. â⬠(Business standard, 2011). The risk of each country when joining the Eurozone was not assessed properly, pricing of sovereign domestic debt of the countries in the Eurozone was set to the same risk-free level. Dominique Strauss Kahn suggests that countries with high credit ratings should, ââ¬Å"put back into the pot part of their interest rate spreadâ⬠in order to help countries such as Spain and Italy (Business Insider, 2012). Dominique Strauss Kahn great idea is to federate risk through the issuing of Euro bonds in the name of all the eurozone countries allowing a spread in the interest rates of weaker economies, therefore reducing the burden for these countries however increasing debt on other. However stronger economies such as Germany are against the idea as they do no want to weigh down their economy. New rules for integrating new countries EU leaders continue to struggle to make budget agreements for the future years. The European Council President Herman Van Rompuy asked for the European Union to have more intrusive control of national budgetary policies if they do not stick to the strict fiscal rules they should be denied their right to vote in EU institutions (Mason, D. 2011). German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French former President Nicolas Sarkozy called for ââ¬Å"strict rules preventing countries running a budget deficit above 3 percent of gross domestic product or public debts above 60 per cent. In opposition to Merkel, Sarkozy ââ¬Å"lists the pooling of eurozone debt as Eurobonds as one potential solution,â⬠with the condition that they are an incentive for discipline (Mason, D. 2011). Conclusion Yes, the euro-crisis is currently having the effect of blocking/stifling the integration process, we need to get out of the crisis before anymore integration can be done , we need to 1/ address the crisis and ââ¬Å"purifyâ⬠the current situation, and 2/redefine the rules of accession in order to continue the integration. Possibly kick out a few countries i. e a more restricted club, the need to have stricter rules of accession to the EU. And have more sanctions available and the disposal to the EU commission. Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Essay Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are critical in the continued cycle of energy to sustain life as we define it. Both have several stages in which the creation of energy occurs, and have varied relationships with organelles located within the eukaryotic cell. The processes are the key in how life has evolved and become as diverse as we know it. Although cellular respiration and photosynthesis have different processes, they are interdependent upon each other, while exhibiting complementary cycles. Cellular respiration by itself refers to the process of drawing energy from food and organic molecules for use. This is done by several reactions that are dependent upon each other. Similar to breathing, whereas as humans inhale oxygen, and exhale carbon dioxide, the process of cellular respiration is the exchange of oxygen to help break down the fuel which is defined as an aerobic process. This process is done by cells exchanging gases with its surroundings in order to create adenosine triphosphate (commonly references as ADT), which ultimately is used by the cells as a source of energy. This process is done through several reactions and is thus an example of a metabolic pathway. In a significantly simplified expression, in cellular respiration chemical energy that comes from fuel molecules is converted into ADP. ADP is then joined with a phosphate, which then converts into ATP, the energy currency of cells. When ATP is consumed or spent by the cells, it releases another phosphate, when will then join with ADP again, to renew the cycle. This entire cycle can be identified by three main stages: glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport. The metabolic pathway that forms within the cytosol is defined as Glycolysis. During this state, one of the molecules of glucose divides into two molecules of pyruvate, which is occurs within the cytoplasmic fluid. To do this a glucose molecule breaks in half to create two three-carbon molecules by using ATP molecules. The newly split carbon molecules then provide electrons to NAD+ to form NADH, and simultaneously creating four additional ATP molecules. Afterwards the pyruvic acid will then lose a carbon molecule, changing into Acetic acid and beginning the citric acid cycle, in which the glucose is further broken down to CO2, an unneeded product, essentially waste. Afterwards, the enzymes used in this process dissolve within the mitochondria, in effect recycling on a molecular level. NADH is generated as the fuel oxidizes. Following that, CoA is created as each of the remaining acetic acid molecules attach to molecules named coenzyme A and then are delivered to the first reaction of the citric acid cycle. It is at this point that the CoA is removed and then recycled to re-attach to another acetic molecule all over again. While in this cycle, the acetic acid combines with additional carbon molecules to become citric acid. Each time one of these molecules starts the cycle as fuel two additional co2 molecules are Wasted. This process is done once for each glucose molecule. The third stage in this process is the electron transport. During this phase, electrons obtained by the reactions completed in the first two stages travel down transport chains to oxygen. Within the inner membrane of the mitochondria is where the proteins and molecules that are the essence of this chain are located. This transport process is where the majority of the energy released creates ATP. A small amount of ATP is also created during the first two stages as well. ATP is the key to this entire process, as certain amounts of it are created in every step, and simultaneous also spent in each step as well. This creates a self-sustaining cellular cycle of energy production and use. Photosynthesis is similar to cellular respiration, in that it is a process of obtaining energy. However, while cellular respiration is completed through animals (and some plants) by converting food and organic molecules to energy, photosynthesis is the process of converting energy from light sources, namely the sun, into chemical energy for plants, algae, and some bacterias. Photosynthesis is a process that occurs within organelles called chloroplasts. These organelles are able to absorb light, and are located inside of leaves. Within the leaf are tiny pores defined as stomata, in which carbon dioxide can enter, and oxygen can exit, the reverse process that in which most animals breathe. Just like animals, the process of photosynthesis needs water, although rather than ingested, water is absorbed through the plants roots and carried up to the leaves. The stomata is perhaps the most critical piece to this process, as this is where CO2 enters and can be stored, and where water and O2 e xit. Almost a reverse of what cellular respiration exhibits; photosynthesis combines carbon dioxide molecules and water obtained from its roots, and captures light energy to start the chemical process in which it creates energy and its byproducts. Its waste byproducts include that of glucose, and oxygen gas which exits from the leaves. These wastes are what cellular respiration needs to function, thus completing the life cycle almost perfectly. During photosynthesis light energy is chemically changed to bond with carbohydrate molecules that then get converted into ATP molecules and the energy within the ATP molecules is able to then be spent to allow the process to repeat continually and simultaneously within the cells. This entire process is done in two stages, the light reactions, and the Calvin cycle. In the first step, the light reactions phase, solar energy is absorbed in the membranes of chlorophyll and chemically changed into ATP and the electron carries NADPH. Water is divided after the electrons are removed from NADP+ which creates NADPH, and oxygen is wasted in a gaseous form. After this is completed, the Calvin cycle begins. During the Calvin cycle phase, the results of the light reactions give the cells the energy to create fuel or sugar from the carbon dioxide. Using ATP it is able to synthesize sugar and the enzymes responsible which get absorbed within the stoma inside the chloroplast. Every time this cycle is complete, sugar is produced, as well as NADP+, and some ADP with an additional phosphate group, these in turn combine with H2O and start the light reactions phase, starting the cycle anew. Both cellular respiration and photosynthesis rely on key organelles within the eukaryotic cell in order to complete these tasks. There are some differences in the way living creatures and plants and fungi go about obtaining energy, and thus use certain organelles located within the eukaryotic cell. Although most living creatures are unable to go through the chemical process of photosynthesis, plants exhibit both processes at the same time. There are several important points that these processes deal with in order to maintain the balance of life within our ecosystem. The processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration are extremely interconnected as they both provide energy that is used by plants, and recycle each others waste for use. With a massively broad simplification example, humans inhale oxygen to keep their cells alive, and through cellular respiration, exhale what is wasted carbon dioxide. Plants on the other hand absorb carbon dioxide, and through both its process of photosynthesis converting light into energy chemically and during the process of cellular respiration, waste oxygen which is then recycled by other plants and humans to begin the process anew. This complementary reaction is what globally helps sustain life on many different levels. As learned through the efforts contributed by Darwin however, cells will evolve based on the needs to the environment in order to survive. The majority of plants are able to go about the process of photosynthesis and draw CO2 directly from the air, however, is some extremely hot and dry climates, or even cold climates, different methods increase the plants chance for survival, and allow it the ability to continue to produce oxygen for life to exist. Both of these examples show how plants have fully adapted to an environment which would otherwise be disruptive to the chemical reactions plants go through to create energy and oxygen. Natural selection has ensured that they are able to still make food and provide the benefit of food and air to other living creatures. Both cellular respiration and photosynthesis have similar goals and cycles with different chemical results. Complementing each other, they allow carbon based life forms the necessary energy required to function, and with the waste produced from both processes, enable a greenhouse effect in which one can benefit from the other continuously.

The manner in which a civilization develops is in direct correlation with the quality and nature of its literature. Literary masterpieces are treasure troves to be read, analyzed, and enjoyed. At first, many ancient masterpieces may seem hard to comprehend for a novice reader; however, the effort exerted to grasp their merit is well worth the result. A Yiddish saying states that life without creativity is existence without joy.Obtaining an understanding and appreciation of successful literature opens the door to learning about the author, the authorââ¬â¢s culture, and the necessary elements to emulate the techniques to produce such a masterpiece. Exposure to literary masterpieces began in my high school years. Ontario educational standards required every student to take classes in Greek, Roman, and Norse literature. Learning ancient Greek and Latin enriched my education and understanding of the value of their literature, and studies of the techniques and styles of each genre.Comprehending the nuances of their languages enhanced the comprehension of these masterpieces. Also I learned illiteracy of the general populous was the reason for early writings written in poetic format so it could be sung. Hesiod, Homer, and Virgil were the master-storytellers who used elements such as personification, metaphors, onomatopoeia, and similes to make their stories come alive to the listener; for example, ââ¬Å"The fertile earth being burnt, roared outâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ provides an auditory picture of the viciousness of the battle (2008, p. 59). The Theogonyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Iliad,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Aeneidâ⬠describe the hierarchy and intrigue of the immortals, including their interaction among themselves and with mortals. The style and techniques applied in literary masterpieces should reflect the religion, culture, or historical influences of the authorââ¬â¢s life experiences. These elements contribute to the substance of the authorââ¬â¢s presentation. For example, it would be extremely difficult for the Book of Genesis to be as effective in teaching the creation of mankind if it were written by a person whose religion was polytheistic.One of the key themeââ¬â¢s of Genesis is monotheism and that the Supreme Being created all things. Platoââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Apologyâ⬠could have been incoherent and less effective without his knowledge of the knack of rhetoric learned from such teachers as Socrates. Sophocles understood the suffering of violence from living through the Peloponnesian Wars. Also his setting for ââ¬Å"Oedipus the Kingâ⬠was Colonus, the same town he grew up in. Of note, he is acknowledged as the creator of skenographiaââ¬âscene painting helping to define better the setting for his play. Finally, Sophocles used symbolism for the name of the heroââ¬âââ¬Å"Oidipousâ⬠means swollen foot.This name emphasizes the angst of Oedipus who was taunted in his youth. (2008, p. 501). The authenticity of the authorââ¬â¢s writing must reflect the authorââ¬â¢s life. The readerââ¬â¢s expectation of the authorââ¬â¢s purpose for writing the literary masterpiece should not be a determinant for the readerââ¬â¢s expectations of its content. The purpose should become evident upon reading the entire piece. For example, the biblical story of Daniel in the lionsââ¬â¢ den inspires courage and faith. The graphic violence in ââ¬Å"Oedipus the Kingâ⬠is disturbing; however, it is thought-provoking.Some literary masterpieces can be painful. For example, reading the Apostle Lukeââ¬â¢s description of Jesusââ¬â¢ crucifixion is emotionally painful and haunting; however, it spiritually enlightens the reader. Understanding literary masterpieces may be difficult to comprehend but not boring. Prede termined expectations of the purpose or proper reactions from literary pieces prejudice the reader and should, therefore, be avoided. Enthusiastic high school English teachers and talented Ancient Greek and Latin teachers encouraged my understanding and appreciation of literary masterpieces.Sometimes, it is hard for a teenager to believe the word ââ¬Å"modernâ⬠is not always the best, and the word ââ¬Å"ancientâ⬠is not always unpalatable. From these encounters, my understanding of cultures, religions, and writing skills expanded. I learned the effectiveness of literary devices such as irony, allegory, onomatopoeia, and satire. The historical time frame of the writing, the cultural aspects of the writer, and historical events within the piece are important aspects in evaluating the quality of literature.If possible, reading literature in its original language helps to increase the appreciation of the quality of its excellence. Finally, reading a piece of literature more than once may enlighten a reader concerning its qualities. Important characteristics of literary masterpieces must focus on artistic excellence, intellectual value, spiritual value, permanence, universal appeal, style, and be thought provoking. No literary piece can stand the test-of-time without these attribu tes. Consider the Torah and the Christian Bible. Their spiritual appeal affects millions of lives.Both have existed throughout the ages. They are thought provoking and have unique styles. The Psalms are well-known and possess all these attributes. For example, Psalms 23 is sung in both Jewish and Christian places of worship. The value of literary masterpieces to the world is immeasurable. There are some important influences of literary masterpieces on modern society. Freud based some of his concepts of psychoanalysis on Sophoclesââ¬â¢ character of Oedipus. The Twelve Commandments from the Torah are the basis for civil laws prohibiting murder and theft.Concepts of human kind ness and acts of charity are based on Jesusââ¬â¢ teaching in the Four Gospels. Charitable and religious groups practice acts of kindness based on these writings. The aforementioned examples demonstrate the importance of literary masterpieces on modern society. Literature is a window allowing readers to see the personality of a civilization. It is a window to the mores, ideals, creativity, and spiritual heart of a civilization. There is immeasurable cultural and spiritual wealth in literary masterpieces.Although some literary masterpieces are difficult to understand, they are a spring of enlightenment to those who strive to grasp their value. The comprehension and admiration of literary masterpieces is a key to obtaining awareness and comprehension of the value of the writings. This key provides a portal to the world of the author, the civilization, and the tools to create such a work of art.
